Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy, in the pediatric setting, focuses on play, learning, and social activities. The primary “occupation” of a child is play, and that is where we aim to begin. Engaging in meaningful and purposeful activities that the child enjoys, while targeting goals specific to each child, and progressing to improve their overall quality of life and independence is at the forefront of what we do.  Contact Mark Their Words Therapy today to request an appointment!

What Occupational Therapy Can Do for Your Child

At Mark Their Words Therapy, our therapists focus on your child’s functional needs by implementing certain exercises and activities that promote childrens’ physical and psychological well-being.

Occupational therapy can improve your child’s ability to engage in functional activities in the home, learning, and play environments to improve their overall quality of life and independence. Each evaluation is centered around each family and client, giving the family time to express concerns, standardized results from the evaluation, and extensive discussion with the therapist.

At Mark Their Words Therapy, our occupational therapy plans include:

  • A client-centered evaluation, with results to track progress
  • Results and discussion determine your child’s goals
  • Customized intervention activities to improve daily tasks and activities for your child.
  • An evaluation of outcomes to determine if goals were met and to make changes to the plan if needed
  • Work with other therapists (ST, FT, PT) to encourage generalization of skills

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), in addition to dealing with your physical well-being, pediatric Occupational Therapy practitioners address psychological, social, and environmental factors that may hinder a child’s function. For example, OT’s can request specific equipment, including standers, splints, activity chairs, or specific utensils that can improve your child’s independence. This unique approach makes occupational therapy a vital part of health care

The Difference Between Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy

While occupational therapy is similar to physical therapy, there are a few distinct differences. Physical therapy focuses on one’s ability to perform certain movements overall, while occupational therapy focuses on their ability to perform certain movements during daily activities.

For example, if you have suffered an injury, a physical therapist will work to build muscle strength, while an occupational therapist will work with a patient to practice basic life skills like walking, eating, bathing, and dressing.

Physical therapy and occupational therapy tend to overlap, as a patient may begin treatments with a physical therapist and then move on to working with an occupational therapist once their pain is relieved and they have regained enough strength/physical function.
